We are Redding Chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation. This foundation works to enhance the health of people, animals and plants by educating the consumer about the differences between conventional processed foods and nutrient-dense, residue-free whole foods. When it is possible, your purchase of food and other products directly from farms and small businesses helps keep our small towns independent and prosperous. This consequently, helps us have access to some very high quality products that are not mass-marketed. For more information, see westonaprice.org.

Local Redding, California Sources of Good Food
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES- There are several Redding Farmers' Markets during the growing season from April through November. There is one in the parking lot at City Hall on Saturday mornings. Many of the same growers attend the Tuesday morning Farmers' Market in the Shasta Center, behind Mervyn's. There is also a Saturday morning Farmers' Market in the parking lot near Chevy's Restaurant. Make sure you ask the growers which items are organic or at least, unsprayed. Our local markets continue to increase their supply of organic produce in response to customer demand. So, if you don't see what you desire, request it from the grocer. There is also a new produce delivery service in the Redding area. They will deliver fresh organic produce to your front door. How easy is that? They are Country Organics and they can be reached at (530) 223-6830. They have different sized produce baskets to choose from.

OLIVE OIL- Olio Olinda Olive Oil is organic and, surprise, is from Olinda, California. It is a lighter olive oil with subtle flavor. You can find it at Orchard Nutrition and at the City Hall Farmers' Market. We also carry this olive oil on our website.

EGGS- At most markets you can find antibiotic-free, hormone-free eggs. There are high Omega-3 eggs at Orchard Nutrition from Chino Valley. Omega-3 fat is an important fat for nerve, hormone, brain, skin and attitude health. Raley's Market carries Organic Valley eggs. They are not found in the health-food department, but in the conventional egg section. Holiday Market is currently carrying both Chino Valley and Organic Valley.

BEEF- We have hit the jackpot when it comes to local grass-fed beef. The healthiest beef is hormone-free, antibiotic-free, grass-fed, animal by-product free beef. Rafter S Ranch in Bieber, California has pure grass-fed beef. It is sold at Orchard Nutrition in Redding, at the City Hall Farmers' Market or you can buy direct at (530) 294-5285.

Flying W Ranch in Bella Vista, California has grass-fed beef that during the last 6 weeks of development is fed alfalfa or corn. They sell at the City Hall Farmers' Market or you can buy direct at (530) 472-3199.

Prather Ranch in Siskiyou County has 85% grass-fed beef. The other 15% of their feed is composed of garden surplus such as squash, almonds, etc. This beef can be found at Kent's Meats on Airport Road in Redding. Ask at their deli counter to see if any of their deli sandwiches are made with Prather Ranch Beef.

Remember, grass-fed meats are high in cancer-protective and heart-supportive fats.
LAMB- The Epperson family raises lamb up in Montgomery Creek, California. It is hormone-free and antibiotic-free. They can be found at the City Hall Farmers' Market on Saturdays or at the Tuesday Farmers' Market in the Shasta Center on Churn Creek Road. Orchard Nutrition also carries lamb from Hulsman Ranch in Shasta County. This is superior quality grass-fed, free-range lamb.

CHICKEN- There is a website called lionsgrip.com/nutrition.html that does a great job explaining what a chicken should be eating. Most organic chickens are fed organic corn or organic soy. This is not the natural diet of a chicken but it is much healthier than commercial chicken. It is still hormone-free and antibiotic-free. Rocky and Rosie Chicken from Petaluma, California can be found at Holiday Market. Both Raley's Market and Sunset Market carry organic chicken from the coast. New on the scene is pastured chicken from Devon Strong in Montague, CA. Please ask us for more info on Mr. Strong's chicken and bison.

FISH- I just cannot get myself to recommend fish for human consumption at this point in our current pollution cycle. Until we clean up the waterways to create a clean enough environment for a fish to live, I would equate eating a serving of fish from all waters about equal to smoking around 6 cigarettes. What does that mean? I consider the level of toxic exposure to be quite high. Occasionally, if you have an efficient enough immune system that can adequately detoxify itself from the eating of the fish or the smoking of the cigarettes, then you are probably healthy enough for occasional consumption of fish. I would not consider it a health food by any measure.

This high toxicity has been caused by industrial waste that is full of mercury that fills our waterways, our air, and consequently, the fish. In my opinion, our fish eating days are behind us. Since one of our areas of focus in our practice has been mercury detoxification, we have seen the damaging effects of mercury on behavior, the brain and the development of the nervous system. Therefore, the risk does not seem worth it. The damaging effects to humans and animals are so preventable. Fish oils that have been cleaned-up and made into supplements are a different story. They are considered safe and health supportive.

BISON- Devon Strong from Montague and East of Adin Ranch raise grass-fed bison. Call our office to locate Devon Strong and call Kirsten Peterson at (530) 299-3173 for East of Adin Bison Ranch.

SAUSAGE- Holiday Market, Orchard Nutrition Center and Sunset Market carry Shelton's sausage links. This is an old reputable company that has never used antibiotics or hormones. The sausages are all free-range. They have breakfast links, patties and Italian sausage. There is also Organic Valley organic sausage at Orchard Nutrition. Raley's Market carries gourmet organic chicken sausages from Organic Valley.

CHEESE- Josh and Jessica Morris started Anderson Creek Dairy Farmstead Cheese. They carry raw organic Cottonwood Jack cheese. You can find this cheese at Orchard Nutrition and Sunset Market. Jessica can be reached at (530) 378-0663. Organic Valley raw cheese is available at Orchard Nutrition and on occasion at Sunset Market. Organic Valley has jack and cheddar that are raw and many other selections of cheese that are organic, yet pasteurized.

YUMMY JUNKIE STUFF- Orchard Nutrition carries cookies from the company, Blessing's Alive and Radiant Foods. They are made of soaked organic almonds, organic raw honey, carob and coconut. Soaked nuts are much easier to digest and the soaking de-activates certain nutrient blocking chemicals that are naturally occurring in nuts. Orchard is now carrying Go-Raw soaked organic snack bars in many flavors. These are great for kid's lunches and between meal snacks or dessert.

BEVERAGES- Orchard Nutrition carries a delicious raw organic Kombucha tea. This tea has been cultured for 30 days to produce active enzymes, probiotcs, liver detoxifiers, amino acids and antioxidants. This is a highly nutritious and refreshing drink.

PROTEIN POWDER- Protein powder makes a great whole-food supplement that can accompany your diet. Noble Supplements Ion Exchange Whey Protein has 24 grams of protein per scoop. We carry this protein powder at our office, as does Enterprise Health Foods. We carry this product on our website....click for the Protein Powders page at our secure, on-line store.

BREADS- Orchard Nutrition has a great selection of sprouted grain breads. They carry Manna Bread, Ezekiel Bread, Alvarado, Pacific Baking, Essene Bread, and at times an artisan bread from Tin-Roof Bakery in Chico. Bread from Alvarado Bakery can also be found at Raley's Market and Sunset Market. Sprouted grain bread is easier to digest than conventional bread.

COCONUT OIL- For health restoration and maintenance it is recommended to eat between 1 and 3 tablespoons of coconut oil daily. We are currently using Tropical Traditions organic coconut oil, a wet-milled product from the Philippines. It is great for your daily cooking needs as well as an eating oil or spread. According to Dr. Bruce Fife, it is cancer and heart disease protective, supports overall digestion, strengthens the thyroid and other endocrine glands, and helps smooth the skin. The benefits seem incredible. We carry this product on our website...click for the Whole Foods page at our secure, on-line store.

FERMENTED FOODS- Yippee! You can keep making your fermented veggies if you want to, but Orchard Nutrition is now carrying fermented veggies from Rejuvenative Foods from Santa Cruz. These lacto-fermented foods are a great accompaniment to any protein meal to support digestion. 1-2 tablespoons with your meal will give you digestive power through the high number of beneficial bacteria and added nutrients.

MILK AND YOGURT- Orchard Nutrition has come on board with Organic Pastures raw dairy products. They carry whole raw milk, raw cream, raw colostrum, chocolate colostrum and butter. Raley's Market and Orchard Nutrition carry Straus Creamery whole milk. This is pasteurized milk but it is not homogenized. The easiest milk to digest is raw whole milk with its ample supply of enzymes designed to aid digestion. Please call our office for our local supplier of raw milk.

BUTTER- It is getting pretty easy to find organic butter in many supermarkets. Organic Pastures from Fresno has raw organic butter sold by the pound. It is for eating and not for cooking. Raw organic grass-fed butter is a healing food. It contains anti-stiffness factors that help keep us pliable as we age. It is also protective against hardening of the arteries, cataracts, and calcification of the pineal gland. The recommended dose is around 1-2 tablespoons per day. Orchard Nutrition now carries this product. In the old days we would have butter making parties-what a lot of work for 2 cups of butter. Thank you Organic Pastures for taking on the task. We are currently carrying this magnificent butter at our office for $12.50 per pound.

GRAINS- Organic dried beans, lentils, brown rice, whole grains and whole grain breakfast cereals that must be cooked are best for us. All grains should be soaked for 24 hours before using to decrease the enzyme inhibitors that decrease the absorption of vital nutrients. For more information on this very easy process see Sally Fallon's Cookbook, Nourishing Traditions, for guidance. Avoid the overuse of processed cold cereals, white rice and white flour products, puffed grains, canned beans, and all factory-made soy products.

SNACK FOODS- Enjoy in moderation organic chips and popcorn cooked in coconut oil. Avoid all snacks cooked in partially hydrogenated oils, microwave popcorn, MSG, and those with nitrates and nitrites.

NUTS- Nuts are a great source of healthy protein, fat and carbohydrates. Raw organic peanuts, pecans, cashews, almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts are available at Orchard Nutrition Center. For best digestion, soak nuts for 6-8 hours then dry in low oven or outside in the sun.

CONDIMENTS- Enjoy raw cider vinegar, fresh lemon, Celtic sea salt, fresh ground organic black pepper, Bionature organic balsamic vinegar, Ohsawa raw fermented miso and soy sauce.

COOKWARE- Use glass cookware when possible like Visionware by Corning. You can get stainless steel baking sheets and cookware from us on our website or at Collier's Hardware in Chico. We are now very pleased to be carrying stainless-steel rice cookers on our website for $71.95. Most rice cookers that are easily available are aluminum.
